The Dalyan Delta
Price: 36.00
Tuesday: 08:00 - 19:30
The Dalyan Delta is one of Turkey’s most wondrous natural phenomena. At the head of the delta lies Lake Köycegiz, a large mystical lake that many years ago formed a natural harbour. Over time, silting has created a warren of reed-covered streams that meander through the town of Dalyan, past the Carian cliff tombs and ruins of Kaunos and on to the fabulous golden sands of Iztuzu beach.
The region is a designated wildlife sanctuary with the delta being home to all manner of flora and fauna. The conservationists’ main efforts have been focussed on Iztuzu beach, which remains one of the last remaining natural nesting sites for Loggerhead sea turtles.
The day begins travelling by boat from Kumlubük to Marmaris, then onward by road for the one hour journey to Lake Köycegiz. The Sultaniye Spa is set on the banks of this beautiful lake. Unlike the mud baths to be found further downstream which are always crammed with tourists, Sultaniye Spa is known primarily to Turks who visit from far to relax in the sulphur baths and indoor & outdoor thermal pools.
Plenty of time is allowed to enjoy the spa a short drive around the lake is followed by lunch on the banks of the river.
The afternoon is spent on the river exploring the wonderful delta scenery, passing underneath the Carian cliff tombs, passing the Carian site of Kaunos and finally relaxing on the glorious sands of Iztuzu beach – all the while keeping your eyes peeled for kingfishers, storks and all manner of wildlife.
