Select Boutique Hotels Ece on Şövalye, Şövalye, near Fethiye, The Gulf of Göcek & Fethiye

Şövalye is an entirely pedestrianised island, just ten minutes across the water from the port of Fethiye. It is a gentle, sleepy place, with shady walkways through pine-scented forests – the perfect place for an island retreat.

Ece on Şövalye enjoys the most spectacular position on the water’s edge, with every one of its 12 spacious rooms providing wonderful sea views.

Peace and quiet reign supreme. Away from the water, the only noticeable noise comes from the island’s wildlife – birds in their hundreds, and a non-stop cacophony of cicadas. Just as the peacefulness of Şövalye makes it a favourite retreat for writers, so the quality of light has a special lure for artists: sharp; clear and shimmering.

The hotel is owned by the lovely Handan and her charming husband Erdogan, and the property is named after their daughter, Ece. The 11 spacious rooms (and one two-bedroom suite) are divided between two buildings and each open-plan room has a double or twin bed, a sitting area, fabulous picture windows to maximize the view, and a large balcony or terrace with, of course, more superb views out to sea.

The terrace restaurant and pool area are the focal point of the hotel. Guests are requested to book at breakfast for the special dinner that is prepared each evening with the freshest of ingredients.

Steps lead down from the terrace restaurant past terraced gardens to the private Beach Club. Here guests can relax by the water’s edge enjoying the wonderful views.

The active are well catered for with the complimentary water sports and will enjoy the challenge of paddling around the island, or swimming – which is a little harder!

At the tip of the island, a ten-minute walk from Ece, is the simple sandy Sunset Beach. Here, the Sunset Café - due to re-open in 2010 - provides the perfect vantage point from which to watch the sun dip below the horizon over a glass of wine and a table full of mezes.
