Select Boutique Hotels Montenegro, Gökçeovacik, near Göcek, The Gulf of Göcek and Fethiye

'breathtaking views & absolute peace'

Of all of our properties, one of the most difficult to capture in words and pictures is Montenegro. It is an exceptional boutique hotel, featured in the Condé Nast Johansen’s guide ‘Recommended Hotels and Spas 2004’.

The first thing to strike you on arriving is the view – it is breathtaking, with limitless acres of pine-clad mountains, farmland and valley laid out before you.

These stunning views are matched only by the sense of peace that comes from the lack of ‘everyday’ sounds. The loudest noises you might hear could be the crickets, or perhaps the dragonflies, or even just the sound of goats’ bells in the distance gently ringing out over the valley.

The hotel itself is built from the local stone, giving the impression that it is literally carved out of the mountainside, and that you are somehow a part of the landscape, rather than simply an observer of it. In fact, Selim, the owner, has taken great care to ensure that every aspect of Montenegro, no matter how seemingly modern and stylish, is in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings and blends in effortlessly.

The result is that as soon as you arrive, you relax. Completely. The hotel motto is ‘Nunc est vivendum’ meaning ‘Now is time for life.’ Selim has created the rarest of things – a place to stay where merely being there makes the motto real.

Montenegro is a firm favourite with the entire Exclusive Escapes team. The stunning views, the stone buildings full of character and the spacious rooms all combine to make this a truly extraordinary destination, and a hotel of the finest quality.

Even the drive up to the hotel is unforgettable – you travel up into the
mountains from Göcek and are instantly transported from the modern world back to another era. As the road climbs through the pine forest you get glimpses of how life used to be throughout Turkey. You pass a scattering of simple village dwellings, then turn up along a bumpy single track that brings you to the oasis of calm that is Montenegro.

The hotel is designed to take full advantage of the stunning panoramic views, with the various stone terraces providing several vantage points from which to do nothing other than sit in absolute tranquillity and
contemplation.

One terrace in particular has been fitted with the most remarkable sound system. This terrace creates the illusion that you are sitting way out on a ledge, with nothing between you and the valley far below. It is the most wonderful experience to sit, glass in hand, listening to the latest piece of music (always gentle and appropriate) to have found its way into Selim’s broad collection, staring across to the mountain range in front – absolutely breathtaking!

It is easy to escape and enjoy privacy at Montenegro but you may also want to mix with your fellow guests.

Rooms
The property has just eight spacious and elegant bedrooms housed in an attractive stone building. Each room is air-conditioned with en suite shower/WC, telephone, satellite TV and hairdryer. Five rooms lead directly onto the beautiful main terraces and swimming pool which are shared by all the guests and a sixth (Hamsi) looks out over the mountains. Each has a terrace commanding breathtaking views down the valley and up to the mountains.

Two recent additions are the delightful ‘Garden and Valley Rooms’ each of which are self-contained and have a private terrace with lovely mountain views.

Montenegro is a hotel of the finest quality in complete harmony with its natural surroundings.
