Istanbul Sumahan on the Water, Çengelköy, Istanbul

NEW FOR 2010

Winner of the Condé Nast Johansens Readers’ Award for 2010

We are delighted to add the very special Sumahan on the Water to our Istanbul collection this year. Its prime location on the banks of the Bosphorus provides uninterrupted views over the water (indeed The Guardian included Sumahan as the only hotel when listing Istanbul's five best waterside views), and its style and service are second to none.

Combine this with its intimate size (just twenty luxurious rooms) and family-run ambience and we believe we have found the perfect Istanbul fit for the Exclusive Escapes philosophy. Needless to say we are thrilled that this stunning boutique hotel has asked us to be their sole authorised representative for guests from the UK.

The Sumahan is a wonderful renovation of an old distillery, and the architect’s keen eye is evident in both the tasteful design and well-retained character of the original building.  Its superb position on the Bosphorus affords sweeping views looking across the water from the Asian side back to the European heart of the city.  Every aspect of the hotel maximises the impact of those far-reaching views: guests can mull the meandering boats and tall sailing ships from the hotel’s rooms, the waterside restaurant and the various terraces, all of which give an equally impressive view of life on the Bosphorus.

With the water on its doorstep, the hotel has its very own launch to whisk guests off to explore the European side, before transporting them back in style at the end of a day’s adventure.  The boat service seems essentially to provide your very own private tour of the Bosphorus, and is quite simply the most fun way to travel in Istanbul.

The serene Sumahan is the perfect retreat after a day spent exploring the hustle and bustle of Istanbul.  Away from the hubbub, guests can relax and wind-down quickly in an oasis of calm and tranquillity.  The well-trained staff will attend to your every need, and yet know equally when to leave you well alone.

Many guests choose to further indulge themselves in the hotel’s beautiful spa, and for those who have yet to experience a traditional soap and scrub, the hamam is an excellent way to acquaint yourself with the delights of a Turkish Bath.

The bedrooms at the Sumahan are furnished stylishly, with floor to ceiling windows providing expansive views over the Bosphorus. The bathrooms are a complete delight, even by - extremely high - Turkish standards.  During the winter there are log fires in many of the rooms, and a well-stocked library of books to curl up and relax with. In summer, doors open onto the garden terraces with several hideaways to relax and admire those staggering views across the Bosphorus.

The hotel has a friendly bar which is ideal for pre-dinner cocktails before dining in the award-winning seafood restaurant, Kordon. Or try the lively Waterfront Terrace restaurant for Turkish cuisine.

A stunning 5 star boutique hotel which we have no doubt will be top of the wish-list for all our guests in Istanbul.
