The Gulf of Göcek

The bustling port of Göcek. The untouched rural mountain villages above Göcek – with superb walking. The nature reserves, historic ruins and fabulous beaches of the Dalyan Delta. All provide a taste of the uniqueness of Turkey.

Mountains, sea, islands and beaches.

The journey from Dalaman airport to the Gulf of Göcek and Fethiye is one of which we will never tire. Coming through the tunnel the road climbs into the mountains before revealing the most breathtaking views. The forest-clad mountain range reaches as far as the eye can see, providing the dramatic backdrop to the plains, coastal towns, villages and beaches that are scattered throughout the region.

This region is the heart of ancient Lycia and host to a number of historic sites amongst which Kadyanda, Kaunos, Tlos, Pinara, Letoon, Xanthos and Patara are particularly noteworthy. The Gulf is also rich in scenic opportunity with plenty to explore – including the stunning beaches of the Fethiye Peninsula, the market town of Fethiye itself, the fascinating ruins of the old Greek settlement at Kayaköy, and the remarkable Dalyan Delta together with the mountain ranges themselves.

Wonderful experiences can be had by simply meandering along the myriad of mountain roads, heading nowhere in particular, just soaking in the astounding scenery and happening across villages where time appears to have stood still.

Dramatic mountains, stunning beaches, cosmopolitan ports, rustic villages and the wonderful islands of the gulf all combine to provide a snapshot of the diversity that makes Turkey and in particular the Lycian Coast so special.

GÖCEK
Only 15-minutes from the airport the road comes through the new tunnel to the attractive port of Göcek. The new marina is a marvellous sight, especially in the evenings, when all manner of seagoing vessels can be seen, from traditional fishing boats to yachts and ‘gin palaces’.

Dining & Ambience
The many waterside restaurants, cafés and bars provide the perfect spot to relax and watch the theatre unfold before you. The ambience is relaxed and unspoilt without a hint of mass-market tourism, as Göcek has always catered for the independent visitor and, thankfully, its services are designed with a view to quality not quantity.

Göcek’s guests come either from the yachts and boats in the harbour or the handful of boutique hotels and villas in the region. This makes for an eclectic mix of visitors of all nationalities.

The streets behind the harbour hold a selection of shops selling all manner of produce. The water frontage and the marina are where the surprisingly wide choice of restaurants and menu types are to be found. A perfect spot to unwind from a busy day spent in exploration of the gulf!

Beaches & Boats
Göcek is the gateway to the wonderful unspoilt islands in the Gulf and these are where many of the regions best beaches are to be found.

The small selection of island beaches are accessible by water-taxi from the harbour or long lazy days may be spent exploring the gulf on an Island Cruise.

All manner of vessels are available for private charter, from simple fishing boats to wonderful yachts – something to suit every budget and taste! Exclusive Escapes have chartered our own gulet to provide a special, complimentary day for most of our guests in the region.

It is possible to swim directly from Göcek, at the Swiss Hotel’s private beach club where Exclusive Escapes guests are welcome to spend the day (for a fee payable locally).

Other beaches are easily accessible by dolmus, car or taxi. Amongst these are Sarigerme which is a long sandy beach and the forest beach at Inlice. Beyond Sarigerme is the fabulous protected sandy beach of Iztuzu in The Dalyan Delta. In the opposite direction the famous beach at Ölü Deniz is only a 40-minute drive away.

GÖKÇEOVACIK
This rural village is set in the mountains only a 20-minute drive from Göcek but it could be a million miles away in terms of ambience. The mountain vistas are incredible, as is the walking.

It is possible to trek for miles, in the cleanest of mountain air, through the forest and mountain paths past the terraces full of olive trees, which are harvested for the cultivation of wonderful olive oil and the fields full of herbs for which the region is also renowned. The trails and roads lead you through mountain villages where life continues much as it has done over many years.

Our properties in the region allow you to relax in beautiful surroundings with the nearby harbour of Göcek easily accessible. Also, importantly, they provide the opportunity for you to experience the natural beauty of this wondrous region in a way that many other visitors never can.
