Trekking on The Lycian Way - 'one of the great walks of the world'

7 days/7 nights

The Lycian Way (which is considered to be ‘one of the great walks of the world’) consists of a carefully researched and signposted trek which links the ancient Lycian sites between Antalya and Fethiye. The route is now renowned as one of the world’s most significant walks.

The Lycian Way is described in historical documents as a transportation system of paths connecting the forty-five known city-states of ancient Lycia. The Mediterranean-Taurus fauna, with its 9,000 species, and the endemic samples of the most extraordinary flowers and trees afford trekkers of The Lycian Way the unique experience of discovering a natural museum.

Whilst trekking, you may also be overwhelmed by the hospitality of the locals you encounter in the mountain villages, and you may discover a little about their fascinating cultural values.

The starting point of The Lycian Way is in Ovacik Village (between Fethiye and Ölü Deniz). From here, you climb to the summit of Baba Dağ (which is at an altitude of 1,975 metres), and then on to Faralya (Üzünyürt) Village, following the frequent road signs (they appear every 100 metres). After Faralya the path gets easier, and is within the forest, again guided by road signs.

The ancient settlements en route such as Sidyma, Pinara, Letoon and Xanthos are samples of the incredible Lycian Period, which fascinates historians and archaeologists.

The Itinerary

Much thought hs been given to the intinerary to ensure asphalt roads are avoided as much as possible. On occasion a short road transfer is provided to avoid roads or less interesting scenery.

Night 1 (Saturday)

An evening in simple accommodation on the night of arrival.

Day 1 (Sunday): Hisarönü to Faralya

The world-renowned Lycian Way starts at Hisarönü, with the dramatic back drop of Baba Dag Mountain. The trek starts here heading towards the village of Kirme prior to continuing on to the mountain village of Faralya which clings to the side of the mountain above the famous Butterfly valley affording magnificent views across the coastline to sea.

4 to 5 hours trek

Day 2: Faralya to Kabak

The entire trek between Faralya and Kabak has verdant pine forests on steep mountain-sides on the left and beautiful sea views on the right. A stunning walk with the opportunity to take a 40 minute detour to enjoy the remote beach at Kabak should you wish to cool off before spending the night in a special ‘tree-house’ camp.

3-5 hours trek

Day 3: Kabak to Alýnca

Today’s uphill route rises from the sea to about 600 m. walking along a small track. The views are spectacular on this part of the Lycian Way.

5 hours trek

Day 4: Alýnca to Gey

Another day of dramatic scenery. A mooning trek from Alynca to Sancakli. From here a transfer to the ancient site of Sydma in their dramatic location. After exploring the site and having lunch a short transfer to Bel for the afternoon trek to Gey.

6 hours trek

Day 5: Gay to Letoon

En route to Letoon we pass Bel meaning pass and is the lowest point between Karadere and the sea. The route follows an old roman road and is varied running inland then backtracking to the sea. Guess will be given t he option of visiting the site of Letoon (which will involve a short road transfer).

5 hours trek

Day 6: Akbel – Patara

The final days walk follows an acqueduct towards its source on the flat plain which forms the estuary of the Esen Valley.

5 hours trek

Day 7 (Saturday)

Following a relaxing morning a transfer is provided to your property in the Kas, Kalkan, Fethiye & Göcek regions or to the airport for your return flight.
