Intro b

A History of Akyaka

The area has been inhabited for about 2,600 years. The city of Idyma was originally founded where today’s Akyaka is situated. The settlement of Idyma extended east of Akyaka up to the village of Közlüküyü (now Gökova). The Necropolis (rock graves) and the Acropolis are on the mountain slopes to the north of Gökova. At the ridge of Gökova and the east- ern side of Inişdibi there are rock tombs which date back to 4BC.

Akyaka was originally only a suburb of Gökova village, and it was made up of a few houses around today’s port (Yeni Iskele). The port formed the access to the sea for the city of Muğla. The village of Akyaka existed as a fishing village, and it was set away from any roads and had little agriculture. In the 1970s, Akyaka’s tourist trade slowly started to develop. It consisted mainly of locals and people from the big cities who sought unspoiled nature. Akyaka’s refreshing summer climate and constant sea breeze was also an attraction. To this day most of Akyaka’s visitors are still Turkish.
