Exclusive EscapesWhat The Papers SayThe Independent | Intro b |

The prevailing accent might be British along this stretch of Mediterranean shore, but it's the local traditions that seduce Brian Viner and his family

As the cicadas commence their early evening concert, I abandon the scattered debris of our completed chess game and move my glass of wine from the table to the side of the Jacuzzi. Having inelegantly clambered in, I turn to musing on what Turkish delicacies our chef will dream up for us tonight.

Indolence without guilt: that sums up a week on a Turkish gulet. These traditional vessels, up to 35m long, provide sheer relaxation. The captain and crew not only sail the boat for you, they even prepare all your meals while you read in a shady corner, swim to a deserted island, sight-see, party and then sleep beneath the stars. To visit monuments or become a monument to idleness? The choice is yours.

Magnificent palaces, mosques and markets are Istanbul's most obvious attractions. But while revisiting the city, Linda Cookson instead faced seawards - and found a world of surprises on the waterway that divides East and West.

Six o'clock in the morning, and the world has barely awoken. We're in a hot-air balloon, drifting over a field full of apricot trees. Every now and then the basket skims so low alongside the treetops that we can lean across and pick the velvety ripe fruit from the branches.

In a quiet fishing village in south-west Turkey, traditional life has been untouched by tourism. Linda Cookson is entranced by the goings-on in Saranda cove.

Villa Mahal, Kalkan Bay
This bright, white hotel cascades down a rocky hill on the south-west coast. Overlooking the turquoise bay of Kalkan, Mahal is the place to escape after partying in Istanbul.

Louis de Bernières may have set his latest novel here, but Turkey's beautiful Kaya Valley still seems a million miles from the tourist trail, says the poet Brian Patten

Turkey’s coastline is a treasure-trove of deserted beaches, ancient villages and turquoise seas Linda Cookson explores on a traditional gulet.
