A Shore Thing: This Summer’s Best Beaches - Alex Gorton

Our guide to the most glorious shorelines in Europe.

Best For Culture Ventures
Patara, Turkey

Backed by ruins, including a Roman amphitheatre, home to nesting loggerhead turtles and the apparent birthplace of Santa Claus, Patara is a 12-mile slice of sand heaven on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Protected from development, the beach is practically deserted save for a tiny teahouse on the eastern end.

Where to stay
In Kalkan – a bougainvillea-covered harbour village only 40 minutes’ drive from Patara.  With cobbled, winding streets, chic boutiques and seafood restaurants, Kalkan is the perfect base from which to explore the region.

Where to go
Wander along the golden sand or head to old archaeological site of Patara on the edge of the beach.  Make time to explore the coastline, home to some of the most important Lycian sites in Turkey.

Getting there
Exclusive Escapes offers the Kalkan Regency.
