TREASURES IN TURKEY - Jill Crawshaw

OVER THE EDGE

The island of Sovalye is a protected archaeological site just off Fethiye, in southern Turkey. The only access is by boat, and the only way to get around is on foot.

The sole accommodation is a new 11-room boutique hotel, Ece, at the water’s edge, where attractions include watersports and snorkelling over ancient ruins and mosaics — the region is littered with rock tombs and sarcophagi.

You can hop over to Fethiye — best day is Tuesday for the huge market — on a 20-minute fishing boat shuttle.

A week’s B&B on the island, with flights, transfers and a day’s gulet cruise, costs from £400 to £750pp.
